It can be difficult for parents in today’s world to find appropriate entertainment for their children — and Disney movies and TV shows tend to fit the bill. But a new show has the Rev. Franklin Graham sending out a warning to parents.
“Andi Mack” is a show that airs on the Disney Channel. The popular show, now in its second season, is marketed towards tweens, and follows the protagonist and titular character, Andi, after she discovers that her older sister is really her mother. The woman Andi thought was her mother is actually her grandmother. According to Deadline, “Andi Mack” is the top series on Disney Channel VOD, Disney Channel’s DisneyNOW app, and Disney Channel UK.
Their new storyline involves a teenager realizing that he is gay. The character, Cyrus, discovers that he has a crush on Andi’s crush, Jonah, and has to figure out how to tell his girlfriend that he’s gay. And it’s this storyline that Graham is warning parents against.
“Disney used to be the brand that parents could trust. They were kind of like the ‘gold seal’ of family programming,” Graham wrote on Facebook. “But those days are long gone. Disney is in the LGBTQ camp, and they’re wanting to use so-called family-friendly programs to influence the youth of today to accept and to be a part of the destructive LGBT lifestyle. They’re introducing a gay storyline in one of their most popular programs, ‘Andi Mack,’ targeting 6-14 year-olds. Parents BEWARE. You can control this in your home. You might want to consider blocking their channel. Let Disney know why you are upset, but also take action that will get your message across.”
He also promoted his Facebook message on Twitter.

For their part, Disney insists that they will be handling the topic in a sensitive manner, and “Andi Mack” creator Terri Minsky said that the show “takes great care in ensuring that it’s appropriate for all audiences and sends a powerful message about inclusion and respect for humanity.”
“Disney remains committed to continuing to create characters that are accessible and relatable to all children,” a statement from Disney said.
LGBTQ organizations like GLAAD and PFLAG applauded the storyline. GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said, “With more and more young people coming out as LGBTQ, ‘Andi Mack’ is reflecting the lives and lived experiences of so many LGBTQ youth around the country.”
“Television reflects the real life world and today that includes LGBTQ youth who deserve to see their lives depicted on their favorite shows,” she continued. “Disney has been a leader in LGBTQ inclusion and there are so many young people who will be excited to see Cyrus’ story unfold.”
